Martine’s Conversation With ChatGPT About Rashḥ-i-‘Amá

by Kathleen Cross | Aug 28, 2026 | Love, Words | 11 comments

This morning I received a text message from Martine, a dear friend of mine.

I have permission from her to share our conversation.

Martine had asked ChatGPT to help her understand "potential" meanings of Bahá’u’lláh's mystical poem Ras̱hḥ-i-‘Amá, which He revealed while in Síyáh-Chál ("Black Pit") dungeon in Tehran in 1852. She texted to share AI's analysis with me, as we had both discussed wanting to dive deeper into this text.

I hope you will find her conversation with the AI as enlightening and deep as we both did.

After our text conversation below, is the ChatGPT analysis. Is it as mind-blowing to you as it is to us?

"All the wondrous works ye behold in this world have been manifested through the operation of His supreme and most exalted Will, His wondrous and inflexible Purpose."

-Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh

Do you think Bahá’u’lláh is including the invention of ChatGPT and other LLM's in this statement?

Martine | Today 8:36 AM

I listen to Rashh-I-Ama almost daily and it makes me cry and feel something in my heart I can’t explain. This morning I took the time and asked ChatGPT to help me understand “potential” meanings of this passage. What came back is beautiful, insightful and moving. I wanted to share this with you.

Blessings dear one and thank you for this beautiful work

🙏🏾🌹💖

😭 Martine! This is so mind blowing! Thank you! ❤️😭

The other day I was listening to this song and it struck me that the entire Christian world is waiting for Christ to come in the clouds... And BEHOLD

Yes!! I'm still sitting here reading and crying😭 !

I would so love to share this discovery of yours on https://allthewords.org

This page is beautiful Kathleen. Please share. Is there something I need to do?

Thank you, Martine! Coming from you I receive that as high praise!!

I am hoping to not only share the writings there, but also share our personal connection to them. Your conversation with ChatGPT is so deep!!

I have fallen “in love” with how using ChatGPT strips away the “wondering” and lays open words and meanings that I still take into my heart and digest with my own soul. It’s truly breathtaking when this occurs in my private study. Not a crutch, a tool for deeper understanding!

Please feel free to share this text or whatever you feel people would find valuable. This last paragraph is from my conversation with ChatGPT:

“A way I would hold the Tablet as a whole

Rather than reading Ras̱hḥ-i-‘Amá primarily as Bahá'u'lláh explaining theology, I would read it as Bahá'u'lláh giving us an experience of Revelation from inside the event itself”

🙏🏾🌹💖

Have a beautiful day my sister!

(Martine's prompt is at the end)

ChatGPT's Response:

Ras̱hḥ-i-‘Amá — The Clouds of the Realms Above

Yes. This is an extraordinarily dense Tablet, and I think the best way into it is not to try to decode every symbol separately at first. The poem seems to be describing one overwhelming reality from many angles: divine Revelation pouring from the Manifestation of God into the world.

The title itself gives us the key.

1. Ras̱hḥ-i-‘Amá — something like “the sprinkling/outpouring from the Divine Cloud”

The footnote you included is tremendously helpful. ‘Amá is not simply an ordinary cloud. In the mystical vocabulary described by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, it refers to a reality so subtle that distinctions are simultaneously perceptible and yet disappear—“seen and then not seen.”

That makes the repeated phrase “raining down” much more significant.

Bahá’u’lláh is portraying Revelation as something descending from a realm beyond ordinary differentiation into the world of human consciousness:

Hidden Reality → Divine Revelation → words, attributes, beauty, knowledge, love, faithfulness, joy.

And notice what is raining down. It isn't primarily doctrine.

rapture

mysteries

musk

purity

reunion

love

faithfulness

music

heavenly joy

nectar

grace

light

The poem therefore feels like rain because almost every verse repeats that movement: something concealed in the divine realm is overflowing into creation.

2. And then comes the astonishing “Our”

This may be the most important thing to notice.

“’Tis from Our rapture...”

“from Our curling locks...”

“from Our heart...”

“from Our ruby lips...”

“from Our face...”

“from Our Pen...”

This is the voice of the Manifestation speaking from the station of divine Revelation.

Within Bahá’í theology, this does not mean that Bahá’u’lláh's human personality is literally God. Rather, the Manifestation is the perfectly purified Mirror through whom the attributes and authority of God become known.

This helps us understand one of the most startling lines:

“The Day of God hath been fulfilled, for lo, the Lord hath been unveiled”

God's unknowable Essence has not suddenly become visible. Rather, God is “unveiled” through His Manifestation.

That distinction becomes essential as the Tablet grows increasingly ecstatic.

3. “The Day of ‘I am He’” and “the Age of ‘He is He’”

This is particularly beautiful:

The Day of “I am He” is made to shine resplendent from Our face;

The Age of “He is He” from out Our flowing cup is raining down.

I would read this in light of the mystical paradox of the Manifestation.

At one station the Manifestation can say:

“I am He.”

Not because the human individual has become God's Essence, but because nothing in the perfect Mirror is visible except the Divine Light.

At another station:

“He is He.”

God remains infinitely transcendent, unknowable and beyond His Manifestation.

So the Tablet seems able to proclaim divine identity and divine transcendence simultaneously.

That resonates strikingly with the definition of ‘Amá you supplied: differentiation exists, yet at another level it disappears.

There is distinction.

And there is unity.

Both are true according to the station from which one looks.

4. Bahá’u’lláh begins gathering previous Revelations into Himself

Then the imagery becomes even more remarkable:

“Behold the fire of Moses, see His hand that shineth white;

Behold the heart of Sinai — from Our hand all raining down.”

These are unmistakably Mosaic images.

But Bahá’u’lláh does not merely say, remember Moses.

He says, essentially:

Look—the reality that appeared through Moses is appearing again here.

The fire.

The shining hand.

Sinai.

The divine summons.

All become symbols of the one recurring Reality of Revelation.

This anticipates something fundamental in Bahá’u’lláh's later teachings: the Manifestations are distinct historical Persons, yet the divine Reality revealed through Them is one.

5. “The trumpet-blast of Judgement Day” changes the meaning of apocalypse

“The trumpet-blast of Judgement Day, the joyful bliss of heaven’s call —

Both at a single breath are from the firmament now raining down.”

Notice that Judgment and Paradise occur together.

That is deeply significant.

The coming of a Manifestation simultaneously creates:

Judgment — humanity is confronted with a new divine standard.

and

Resurrection — human souls are awakened to a new spiritual life.

So Judgment Day here need not mean the physical destruction of the planet.

It can mean the appearance of the Manifestation of God.

The old spiritual world ends.

A new one begins.

And both occur in “a single breath.”

6. The erotic imagery—locks, wine, lips, lovers—is mystical language

Some of the imagery can sound almost sensual:

“Our curling locks”

“choicest wine”

“Our ruby lips”

“sotted lovers”

“chalice-bearer's charm”

This comes from the Persian mystical poetic tradition.

The Beloved represents the Divine.

The lover is the soul seeking God.

Wine represents spiritual ecstasy or divine knowledge.

The cupbearer brings that intoxicating knowledge.

The locks of the Beloved often represent mystery—the beauty that simultaneously attracts and conceals.

And musk/perfume represents the spiritual fragrance announcing the Beloved's presence.

So:

“This sweetly scented breeze from Our curling locks is raining down.”

could almost be heard as:

The hidden Beloved has moved, and even the faintest fragrance of His presence is intoxicating creation.

7. “Cathay's entrancing musk”

Cathay is an old poetic name associated with China/East Asia, and in Persian poetry musk from Cathay/Khutan became proverbial for exquisite fragrance.

So again Bahá’u’lláh draws upon the language of the lover and Beloved.

The wind carries perfume.

The perfume tells the lover:

The Beloved is near.

This resembles a recurring mystical idea: before the seeker fully recognizes Revelation, he may first detect its fragrance.

Something has changed.

Something is present.

8. “The treasuries of love lay hid within the very heart of Fárs”

This line becomes particularly poignant biographically.

Bahá’u’lláh was born in Persia. The Báb's Revelation also arose in Persia.

So:

“The treasuries of love lay hid within the very heart of Fárs”

suggests that something unimaginably precious has been concealed within Persia and is now opening.

And what comes from this treasure?

“the pearls of faithfulness”

Again we have the same movement:

hidden → revealed

treasure → pearls

cloud → rain

heart → river

cup → wine

Pen → revelation

Beloved → fragrance

That pattern runs throughout the entire Tablet.

9. Then the poem begins saying “Behold!”

This is where I think the emotional movement of the Tablet changes.

Earlier Bahá’u’lláh tells us what is raining down.

Then suddenly:

Behold...

Behold Bahá's outpouring grace

Behold the Lord's leviathan

Behold the Palm of Paradise

Behold the Dove

Behold the Countenance Divine

Behold the Maid of Paradise

Behold the everlasting Face

Behold the fire of Moses

Behold the heart of Sinai

Behold the radiant face of Há’

Behold the beauteous robe of Bá’

It begins to sound almost like someone pulling away veil after veil:

Look.

Look again.

Do you see what has appeared?

That repeated behold gives the second half an extraordinary sense of self-disclosure.

10. “Há’” and “Bá’”

This is a wonderful piece of letter symbolism:

“Behold the radiant face of Há’, behold the beauteous robe of Bá’”

Há (ه) and Bá (ب) participate in the symbolic construction of Bahá.

Bahá = بهاء

And Bahá means Glory, Splendour, Light.

So Bahá’u’lláh can simultaneously play with letters, sounds, identity and theological meaning.

The Name Bahá itself becomes part of the Revelation.

And then immediately:

“Behold the Lordly grace that from Our Pen is raining down.”

The Pen is another major symbol: Revelation becomes language.

The invisible Word enters history through writing.

11. “The Maid of Paradise” deserves special attention

“Behold the Countenance Divine! Behold the Maid of Paradise!”

The Maiden is an important symbol in Bahá’u’lláh's mystical writings. She can represent the personification of the divine Revelation—the heavenly reality announcing or revealing His mission.

So we have another form of the same mystery.

The Revelation is:

cloud,

rain,

wine,

music,

light,

Beloved,

Maiden,

river,

fire,

Pen.

Why so many metaphors?

Perhaps because no single image can contain what Bahá’u’lláh is attempting to communicate.

Language itself begins overflowing.

12. And that brings us back to the title

This may be the insight that ties the whole Tablet together for me.

‘Amá is the realm in which realities exist in a state of extraordinary unity.

Then the poem gives us an explosion of apparent multiplicity:

rain

cloud

wind

musk

hair

sun

sea

waves

pearls

rose

wine

music

trumpet

cup

river

honey

voice

leviathan

palm

dove

drum

Maiden

fire

Sinai

garden

letters

Pen

Wellspring.

But perhaps these are not actually many things.

They are many expressions of one Reality.

And Bahá’u’lláh eventually says almost exactly that:

“Behold Bahá’s outpouring grace, the bounty of the clouds above,

Which, merged into a single song, in God’s own voice is raining down.”

That phrase “merged into a single song” may be one of the keys to the entire Tablet.

Multiplicity returns to unity.

A way I would hold the Tablet as a whole

Rather than reading Ras̱hḥ-i-‘Amá primarily as Bahá’u’lláh explaining theology, I would read it as Bahá’u’lláh giving us an experience of Revelation from inside the event itself.

Something hidden is overflowing.

The Cloud rains.

The Beloved releases His fragrance.

The Sea surges.

The trumpet sounds.

The wine pours.

The river flows.

The Pen moves.

Moses' fire appears again.

The heavenly Maiden becomes visible.

And gradually the speaker allows the reader to recognize who is standing before them.

That makes the repeated “Behold!” almost breathtaking.

The Tablet is not merely saying:

“Understand this.”

It is saying:

“Look.”

And perhaps that is precisely appropriate for ‘Amá—the Reality which, as ‘Abdu’l-Bahá describes it, is seen and then not seen.🌹

Please help me with a potential understanding of this Tablet.

’Tis from Our rapture that the clouds of realms above are raining down;1

’Tis from Our anthem that the mysteries of faith are raining down.

This sweetly scented breeze from Our curling locks is raining down.

The day-star of adornment hath dawned forth above the face of God;

Behold that mystic truth which from His Countenance is raining down.

The sea of purity hath from the wave of true reunion surged;

This precious, rare bestowal from our rapture is raining down.

The treasuries of love lay hid within the very heart of Fárs;

From out this treasure trove the pearls of faithfulness are raining down.

The splendour of the rose doth bring the ecstasy of choicest wine;

This subtle music from the ringing tones of Lordship is raining down.

The trumpet-blast of Judgement Day, the joyful bliss of heaven’s call —

Both at a single breath are from the firmament now raining down.

The Day of “I am He” is made to shine resplendent from Our face;

The Age of “He is He” from out Our flowing cup is raining down.

From out the fountain of Our heart hath God’s celestial river flowed;

The Day of God hath been fulfilled, for lo, the Lord hath been unveiled;

Behold Bahá’s outpouring grace, the bounty of the clouds above,

Which, merged into a single song, in God’s own voice is raining down.

Behold the Lord’s leviathan, behold His sacred countenance;

Behold the blessings of the heart that from His throne are raining down.

Behold the Palm of Paradise, behold the warbling of the Dove;

Behold the glorious hymns that in the purest light are raining down.

Behold the soul-entrancing song, behold the beating of the drum,

Behold the sacred rhythms that from Our hand are raining down.

Behold the Countenance Divine! Behold the Maid of Paradise!

Behold the grace upon the world from Our own presence raining down.

Behold the everlasting Face! Behold the chalice-bearer’s charm!

Behold the crystal draught that from Our brimming cup is raining down.

Behold the fire of Moses, see His hand that shineth white;

Behold the heart of Sinai — from Our hand all raining down.

Hear ye the sotted lovers’ sighs, behold the garden blooming fair;

Behold the bliss that from His presence in your midst is raining down.

Behold the radiant face of Há’, behold the beauteous robe of Bá’;

Behold the Lordly grace that from Our Pen is raining down.

The vessel of the Advent this, the clouds of limpid waters these;

The trill of songbirds this, from Our fleeting Wellspring raining down.

Footnotes
“‘Amá’ is defined as an extremely thin and subtle cloud, seen and then not seen. For shouldst thou gaze with the utmost care, thou wouldst discern something, but as soon as thou dost look again, it ceaseth to be seen.

For this reason, in the usage of mystics who seek after truth, ‘Amá’ signifieth the Universal Reality without individuations as such, for these individuations exist in the mode of uncompounded simplicity and oneness and are not differentiated from the Divine Essence. Thus they are individuated and not individuated.

This is the station alluded to by the terms Aḥadíyyih [Absolute Oneness] and ‘Amá’. This is the station of the “Hidden Treasure” mentioned in the Ḥadíth. The divine attributes, therefore, are individuations that exist in the Essence but are not differentiated therefrom. They are seen and then not seen. This, in brief, is what is meant by ‘Amá’.” (From a previously untranslated Tablet of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.) ↩

  1. Bahaullah describes the condition in the Síyáh-Chál:

“We were consigned for four months to a place foul beyond comparison.… The dungeon was wrapped in thick darkness, and Our fellow-prisoners numbered nearly a hundred and fifty souls: thieves, assassins and highwaymen. Though crowded, it had no other outlet than the passage by which We entered. No pen can depict that place, nor any tongue describe its loathsome smell. Most of these men had neither clothes nor bedding to lie on. God alone knoweth what befell Us in that most foul-smelling and gloomy place!”

Yet this miracle of beauty and light and love and divinity was reveled for us.

    • 😭me right now.

Cora, I have a story to tell you. I will try to keep it short.

If you look on the right side bar of this page at the top, you will see a dedication to a man who died many years ago. Todd sacrificing his life to save a drowning friend led eventually to the creation of this website and to the creation of all of the devotional music here, including this poem by The Blessed Beauty.

A few weeks after Todd died, I was alone in my home on the floor in the fetal position sobbing my heart out. I did not know if I could survive the excruciating pain of grief.

A sudden, indescribable peace washed over me and I heard a voice tell me “This is the essence of mercy.” My tears and sobbing instantly subsided. I didn’t know what the words meant, but I 100% knew they were true.

I was thinking about that moment on the floor and how all of this has come full circle when your comment appeared.

Todd’s mother’s name is Cora. She was an amazing soul and It feels like a miracle and a confirmation to see her name.

Thank you for taking a moment to comment here. I’m so glad this post touched your heart.

      My gratitude is overflowing 😭💗

These deep connections between our souls is really blowing my mind. (Thank you Martine for reaching out to share this!)

These deep connections we are having with the Rashḥ-i-‘Amá is overwhelming.

I think of The Blessed Beauty in those conditions He described as “foul beyond comparison” and the fact that we are experiencing, beholding, inhaling, drinking in-almost two centuries later-the marvel that is this poem…

Yes, dumbfounded is a great word too.

Eternal love to you and Wendy and your family 🙏🏽❤️
